In 1989, Lovins referred to this saved energy as a “negawatt”. Twenty years later, we're finally catching up. Today, conservation plays a critical role in balancing our demand for electricity with our capacity to generate it. ... The idea is to make energy conservation part of your everyday life. The first step is to count yourself in by committing to create your own personal conservation plan using some of the 100 energy-saving tips listed on the ECW website. For home: ...

Actually when I coined the phrase "Negawatt" It was my attempt to come up with a term that would simply state what energy conservation consisted of in the nutshell. While I will not question widely read and respected Amory Lovins "proof" of how he came up with the term..I do suggest that others, perhaps me, Earl Allen Boek, founder of American Energy Conservation Group, of Redding, CAmay have actually created and used the term in conjunction with the actual hands on related use for it. As such, the definition for Negawatt, which never had the word power, or network, or any other (now trade marked) word attached, has in fact become convoluted and more confusing than it need be.

So I question the idea that Negawatt was the idea of creating incentives to reduce demand, though I agree it may have morphed into that use as time went on.

The term comes from the widely held idea that it will always be more cost-effective to save a watt of energy, or a therm of gas, for that matter, than to pay to create a new watt. This was my idea when I coined MY "Negawatt" word. The act of saving this watt is called conservation. Hence the name of my company founded in 1981 in Northern California.

For the record, The Term YESWECANSOLVEIT which has had the dot com, dot, net, taken and reserved by others, I came up and named a MyObama Group with. The Name GreenEarl is also original, this time I was able to protect and register the .com,.net and .info The Name American Energy Conservation Group is authentic, hard to dispute a name where a register DBA is still on the record. And the ongoing use on the internet today, also helps as does the including a term like "Negawatt" in a book, but I never wrote too much about Energy Conservation, THE ART OF CREATING NEGAWATTS..(hum, nice title for my first book) I was too busy, most the time, doing it._Green Earl

Negawatt power is the idea of creating incentives to reduce demand for electricity to ease the load at peak times or alleviate the need to build more generation plants. In theory, these negawatts can be aggregated and an arbitrage market could be created to trade these.

The term was coined by Amory Lovins, who saw a typo — "negawatt" instead of "megawatt" — in a Colorado Public Utilities Commission report. He adopted the term to describe electricity that wasn't created due to energy efficiency.[1]

An electricity supplier that needs more electricity can invite suppliers to bid to supply it and invite customers to bid to reduce demand. The electricity supplier can then compare these quotations to establish the most economic alternative. This comparison can refer to peak load management - how much per additional kW to get the power company through the peak load due to air conditioning on an unusually hot day - or may refer to longer-term investments - comparing the cost of building a new power station with the cost of, for instance, providing customers with low energy light bulbs.

A genuine market for negawatts requires regulatory failure elsewhere: the price of electricity at peak times must be lower than the marginal cost of supplying additional peak demand, or there must be constraints on the installation of new capacity.

Establishing a market may require legislation and cooperation between primary producers, distributors, traders and consumers. For instance, generators' income is commonly derived from selling electricity and their cash flow may be reduced by trade in efficiencies, but increasing supply by raising consumption efficiency is often less expensive than building new power plants.

New markets have developed in several regions across the United States to allow "demand side resources" to participate in wholesale energy markets. These markets are commonly referred to as demand response.

The naming concept could be expanded; cf. negajoules or negawatt-hours. [2]
