The Power of Poo

Farmers generate energy, save money and help the environment, with a little help from some dung.
By Monica Heger, posted October 8th, 2008.

I saw the monstrous blue tank before I saw the New Hope View sign. Even though the tank was set back from the road, it stuck out like a sore thumb nestled among the bucolic hillsides. As I turned into the driveway, I couldn't help but wonder if other passersby knew what it held--three million gallons of liquefied cow dung.

New Hope View Dairy Farm is one of 15 farms in New York State generating electricity from an ever-plentiful, if rather unlikely source: cow manure. At New Hope View in Homer, New York the 1,000 dairy cows produce enough poo to power the entire farm.

This process of converting manure to electricity--called anaerobic digestion--is being done on farms throughout the United States and is becoming more widespread as energy costs soar.

Wisconsin leads the pack with 20 farms producing biogas, the gas captured from the poo, about 60 percent of which is methane. A utility company in Vermont offers its customers the option of buying cow-power, and some California dairy farms just signed a contract with Pacific Gas & Electric.

The benefits are multifold for farmers. Anaerobic digesters don't just turn manure into electricity; they also create, as a byproduct, a nutrient rich, odor-free fertilizer as well as a solid that farmers can use for compost or cow bedding. Plus, there are environmental benefits.

Manure emits methane, a greenhouse gas with 20 times the heat trapping potential as carbon dioxide. Capturing the methane to use for electricity prevents it from entering the atmosphere. The neighbors are also appreciative, as anaerobic digestion greatly reduces the stinky smell.

"It's cleaning the environment and tapping an untapped resource," says Trevor Head, owner of New Hope View Dairy Farm.

Anaerobic digestion also offers farmers an added source of income--they can save money on electricity, cow bedding or compost, and possibly make extra money by selling leftover electricity or solids.

In order to make money, though, you have to spend money. And the biggest hurdle to overcome is price. Initial capital investment, which can be over $1 million, is often a disincentive, and the eventual payback can take years. Another problem is maintenance. Dairy farmers are in the business of making milk, not electricity. Operating an anaerobic digestion system is time away from their main job.

***

Head and I tromp across the field to get a better look at his digester, where the process of converting manure to electricity begins. Standing next to the cow barn, he points to a long white dome popping out of the ground in front of the gargantuan blue tank holding the liquid poo. That's the digester. It is a long, cylindrical, airtight, underground tank kept at 100 degrees Fahrenheit--the same temperature as a cow's stomach.

He collects manure from the cows and loads it into the digester. Bacteria, which come free of charge with the cow pies, go to work breaking down the dung. "The digester is a living, breathing organism, just like a cow," he says.

There are two types of bacteria in a cow's stomach that get passed out with poop. The first one breaks the poo down into acids. The second type breaks the acids down into a gas. Besides the 60 percent that is methane, the rest of the gas is mainly carbon dioxide, with trace amounts of hydrogen sulfide and ammonia.

Head says the manure takes about three weeks to fully break down. As it breaks down, it moves along the length of the digester. It goes in one end and comes out the other, just like in a cow. Standing in such close proximity to the digester, I'm not disappointed that the poop and its accompanying odor is kept underground.

An underground PVC pipe carries the biogas to a microturbine in the utility room. Head and I walk toward the utility room where the loud whirring of the microturbine can be heard long before setting foot inside.

The biogas from the manure has two main tasks. The first is to heat the water that keeps the digester at 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Secondly, it powers the microturbine, which generates electricity for the farm. If more biogas than is needed to continuously power Head's 70-kilowatt microturbine is generated, the remainder is burned off.

Head points about 30 feet away from the utility room to a long pole that looks a bit like an oversized tiki torch. Every so often a billow of steam drifts out the top. It is the extra biogas being burned off.

"It's a balancing act," Head says. Ideally, you wouldn't have any leftover gas. Or the leftover gas could be used for other things--Head wouldn't mind if he could use it to heat his house, for instance. But that would require a very long pipe to channel the gas to his house a mile away. Selling electricity back to the grid is even more complicated and requires a purer biogas and cooperation from the local utility company.

Great Importance, Thanks BERNARD.

It's more Bad News about radiation affecting health, but is anyone surprised?

I postulate that the radiation affects the food's DNA, so when eaten, the body of the cat (or human) does not recognize it as a food substance, but as an unknown intruder. Hence the Immune System is triggered and atacks the myelin, just as in other autoimmune diseases, like Multiple Sclerosis.

Now due we name a new disease, IFS, Irradiated Food Sclerosis?

Rob [bob-pol] Are our scientists out of control?

Irradiated Food Causes Demyelination and Brain Damage

A company testing the effects of irradiated food on growth and development reported that some cats fed such a diet developed severe neurological dysfunction, including movement disorders, vision loss and paralysis.

The cats developed the symptoms, which appeared to be the result of a demyelinating disease, after being on the diet for three to four months. Myelin is a fatty insulator of nerve fibers that degrades in a host of human central nervous system disorders, such as multiple sclerosis.

The afflicted cats were shown to have sev ere and widely distributed demyelination of the central nervous system. In cats removed from the diet, demyelinated axons slowly became remyelinated, but the restored myelin sheaths were still not as thick as healthy myelin.

RADICAL RIGHT
Obstructing Progress

Yesterday, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) said that in the next five weeks until Memorial Day recess, the Senate will "tackle a hefty legislative agenda that includes bills to rein in predatory practices in the housing and credit card industries and a reform of government procurement." Looking back on what Congress has accomplished since the beginning of the year, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said, "The three pillars of the president's budget -- education, energy and health care -- have already been advanced down the field to a significant extent in the first three months." The optimistic tone of the Democratic leaders in Congress, however, is not shared by their counterparts in the Republican Party. House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) said in a press conference yesterday that, in the last four months, "it's become clear to him [Obama] that the idea of bipartisanship 'was a ruse.'" However, the seeming absence of bipartisanship isn't a result of the Obama administration's lack of trying. Congressional Republicans have done little but delay key executive branch nominees and attempt to block key legislation, all the while failing to offer any alternative ideas of their own.

DELAYING NOMINEES: Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) objected to a motion to begin debate on the nominations of Gov. Kathleen Sebelius (D-KS) as Secretary of Health and Human Services, David Hayes for deputy secretary of the Interior Department, and Thomas Strickland for assistant secretary for fish and wildlife at Interior. Regarding Sebelius, McConnell said he objected because members of his caucus had not yet had time to consider her candidacy properly. However, the real reason is that a select few in the Republican caucus are attempting to delay her appointment -- at the insistence of right-wing social conservative groups -- because of her commitment to pro-choice women's health policies. The delay is reminiscent of what transpired after Ambassador to Iraq Christopher Hill's nomination, when a small group of Republican senators -- including John McCain (AZ), Lindsey Graham (SC), and Sam Brownback (KS) -- announced their opposition, claiming Hill "lacks experience in the Middle East." As the National Security Network's Max Bergmann pointed out, they really took issue with his desire to avoid bombing North Korea. Further, the only substantive result of delaying Hill was to hinder the Obama administration's ability to effectively and efficiently make progress in Iraq. Indeed, Gen. David Petraeus was reportedly "frustrated by the delay." A similar chain of events is likely to play out with Sebelius, Dawn Johnsen, Harold Koh, and many other key nominees. The goal in holding up Obama nominees, it should be clear by now, is not to find better qualified nominees or answer substantive concerns. Rather, it appears to be part of an attempt on the part of Republicans in Congress to "obstruct and delay" the implementation of the legislative agenda the American people voted for last November.

BLOCKING THE PROGRESSIVE AGENDA: Since January, Congress has expanded access to health care for low-income children through the passage of SCHIP Expansion, laid the ground work for economic recovery with the passage of Obama's Recovery and Reinvestment Act, and passed a budget resolution that demonstrated the Obama administration's intention to push for real progressive changes in the tax code, the health care system, and environmental regulation. On health care in particular, congressional Republicans have worked hard to register their opposition to reform. As the Wonk Room's Igor Volsky explained yesterday, "Key Republicans voted against the popular SCHIP legislation, eight Republican senators (including health care heavy weights Grassley and Hatch) voted [in committee] against Gov. Kathleen Sebelius's nomination to head the Department of Health and Human Services, misrepresented the intent of health information technology...in the stimulus, and have already taken the public option off the table." But both the Senate and House leadership are serious about making health care reform happen this year. Due to obstructionism, however, they may now have to implement health care reform through the budget reconciliation process, which would allow the reform measures to be "protected from filibusters and passed by a simple majority vote." Republicans used reconciliation to pass the 2001 and 2003 Bush tax cuts, key provisions of their signature legislative agenda in 1994, the Contract with America, and on many other occasions in the last 30 years. Now, however, the Republicans have developed a bit of "political amnesia" and are calling the use of reconciliation the "Chicago approach to governing" and "a declaration of war." Further, they are plotting retaliatory parliamentary tactics -- including refusing to attend committee hearings and demanding that the text of bills, often hundreds of pages long, be read aloud -- that would "grind the Senate to a virtual halt." Yesterday, however, Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) conceded that Democrats have the "right" to pass health care reform using the reconciliation process.

FAILING TO PROVIDE AN ALTERNATIVE: While Republicans have worked hard at saying "no," they have repeatedly failed to offer realistic alternative proposals. Several days after presenting his budget proposal, Obama pointed out during a prime-time press conference that congressional Republicans were failing to offer concrete alternatives to his budget. In response, Boehner hurriedly assembled a news conference to introduce their alternative "budget." "Here it is, Mr. President," Boehner declared, brandishing a glossy 19-page document in his hand. The only problem was that Boehner's budget didn't contain any numbers. When Republicans finally offered a detailed plan on, ironically, April Fool's Day, it did not appear to make any more economic sense than the brochure of recycled ideas they released the week before. Indeed, despite the growing recession, the plan called for a five-year spending freeze which, as the Wonk Room's Pat Garofalo explained, would "negate the stimulus, while betting economic recovery will occur thanks to an abundance of supply-side tax cuts." This trend appears likely to continue. Indeed, in a week dominated by congressional hearings on energy and health care, Boehner mentioned each issue only once yesterday in his press conference -- and that was to tell reporters that House Republicans still have no alternative health care plan and no alternative energy and environment plan. "Our health care solutions group is continuing to do their work. Our energy solutions group continues to do its work." Still, he insisted that "you'll continue to see us try to be the party of better solutions."

UNDER THE RADAR

HUMAN RIGHTS – MINERALS USED IN EVERYDAY ELECTRONIC DEVICES FUEL WORLD'S DEADLIEST CONFLICT: Today, the Enough Project published a paper highlighting the link between violence in eastern Congo -- the deadliest conflict in over 50 years -- and Western electronics corporations. Specifically, electronics companies are utilizing mined minerals as components of the equipment they sell -- such as cell phones, computer screens, and other common devices. Enough and the Grassroots Reconciliation Group are calling on the companies to publicly demonstrate they are not using minerals that fuel and finance the war. "It is no accident that the majority of the violence in eastern Congo has been carried out in areas rich with minerals. Conflict minerals remain a key source of financing for some of the most reprehensible armed groups in the world," John Norris, Enough's executive director, explained. "Bringing transparency to the consumer electronics supply chain is an essential first step if we want to transform Congo's mineral resources from a curse into an engine of growth for millions of people who remain trapped by both violence and poverty." Enough has also kicked off a consumer-led initiative through the RAISE Hope for Congo campaign to compel the 21 largest electronic companies in the United States to ensure that their products are conflict-free. "As consumers and global citizens, we have a critical role to play in demanding that companies and governments exercise leverage over the supply chain," says Enough Co-Founder John Prendergast.

CIVIL RIGHTS -- U.S. ATTORNEY UNDER BUSH APPROVED WARRANTLESS CELL PHONE TRACKING: While serving as a U.S. attorney during the Bush administration, Christopher Christie tracked the whereabouts of citizens through their cell phones without warrants. The ACLU obtained the documents detailing the spying program from the Justice Department in an ongoing lawsuit over cell phone tracking. While the documents reveal 79 such cases on or after Sept. 12, 2001, they do not specify how many of the applications were made during Christie's tenure. Christie served as U.S. attorney from Jan. 17, 2002 through November 2008. The new revelations about the cell phone tracking program under Christie is yet another example of the warrantless spying programs authorized under the Bush administration. Previous programs approved without a court order or warrant have included the secret program to monitor radiation levels at over 100 Muslim sites and the National Security Agency spying program on the phone and e-mail communications of thousands of people inside the U.S.

RADICAL RIGHT -- REP. SHIMKUS SAYS CAPPING CO2 IS A GREATER 'ASSAULT ON DEMOCRACY' THAN 9/11: Yesterday, Rep. John Shimkus (R-IL) described President Obama's energy plan as "the largest assault on democracy and freedom in this country that I've ever experienced." Speaking at a hearing for the Waxman-Markey Clean Energy and Security Act -- which if passed, will introduce stricter regulations on greenhouse gas emissions in order to build a clean energy economy -- Shimkus made his intense fear of the legislation clear, saying, "I've lived through some tough times in Congress -- impeachment, two wars, terrorist attacks. I fear this more than all of the above activities that have happened." Shimkus's comments, however, are not the first nonsensical remarks he has made about environmental policy. Earlier this year, the congressman asserted that there is no need for a cap-and-trade system to limit CO2 emissions both because CO2 is "plant food" and because carbon emissions were much lower "in the age of the dinosaurs," therefore yielding a "theological debate that this is a carbon-starved planet, not too much carbon." He has also claimed that global warming is not an issue since "the earth will end only when God declares its time to be over."

THINK FAST

In the debate over whether to release the Office of Legal Counsel torture memos, President Obama faced "one of the sharpest policy divides of his young administration." On one side was Obama's top counterterrorism adviser and CIA director Leon Panetta; on the other was Defense Secretary Robert Gates, Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Michael Mullen, White House counsel Gregory Craig, Attorney General Eric Holder, and DNI Dennis Blair.

Since President Obama indicated that he would be open to an investigation into the Bush administration's authorization of torture, pressure has mounted for a full inquiry. However, the White House and Democratic leadership in the Senate signaled yesterday that "they would block for now any effort" to establish an independent inquiry into the matter.

Last night, the Obama administration agreed to "release dozens of photographs depicting alleged abuses" at U.S. facilities in Iraq and Afghanistan under the Bush administration. This marks the first time photos from prisons other than Abu Ghraib will be made public. A "substantial number" of photographs are set to be released by May 28.

According to a "previously undisclosed Iraqi government tally" obtained by the Associated Press, at least "87,215 Iraqis have been killed in violence since 2005." Yesterday, at least "80 people died and 120 others were injured" in three suicide bombings in Iraq.

Congressional Democrats are preparing to "deliver a big gift to President Obama on his 100th day in office: a fiscal 2010 budget resolution that makes room for his top domestic policy priorities." Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) said that "budget negotiators could complete work on a final plan by Monday, clearing a path for House and Senate passage by the middle of next week."

In late 2005, then-attorney general Alberto Gonzales told then-CIA director Porter Goss "to hold off on briefing lawmakers about the conversation" between Rep. Jane Harman (D-CA) and an Israeli intelligence official. "One reason Mr. Gonzales intervened...was to protect Ms. Harman because they saw her as a valuable administration ally in urging The New York Times not to publish" its 2005 article about warrantless wiretapping.

Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Michael Mullen said in an interview to be broadcast today that he is "extremely concerned" about the Taliban moving closer to Pakistan's capital of Islamabad. "We're certainly moving closer to the tipping point" where Pakistan could be overtaken by Islamic extremists, he said. Mullen added that he feels "events continue to move in the wrong direction" in both Pakistan and Afghanistan.

"The Obama administration is preparing to admit into the United States as many as seven Chinese Muslims who have been imprisoned at Guantanamo Bay in the first release of any of the detainees into this country." But the Homeland Security Department has already "registered concerns about the plan."

And finally: Dick Cheney and Karl Rove are annoying Meghan McCain. Yesterday, McCain guest-hosted ABC's "The View" and offered some blunt talk for Rove and Cheney, two of the most prominent critics of the Obama administration. "It's very unprecedented for someone like Karl Rove or Dick Cheney to be criticizing the president," McCain said. "My big criticism is just, you had your eight years, go away."

Some Observations Watching The Hearings On Climate Change On C-Span

First of all, American Energy Conservation is now prepared to
begin a marketing effort in the State that should prove very
profitable for all involved. The market is huge, product and
financing, and expertise are all standing by...Still we need
some funding to kick-start the marketing effort...Currently
looking for investment capital, in the $100K range in exchange
for membership interest in the Marketing LLC..Expect first
year sales in the $30 million dollar range at about 25% Pre-Tax
GP. Interested certified parties, or groups should contact

Now, Regarding The Hearings Held In Washington, DC Today...

First of all Ms Bono Mack (R) Palm Springs, Ca.,You do not have
large expansions of "windmills" in your district..Those big
things spinning around out there in the middle of the desert
are Wind Farms, Wind Generators, Wind Turbines, or even Wind
Machines...if you want...But they do not mill grain...

One other thing..blaming the Feds and Sacramento for the deregulation
mess and resulting Brown Outs and general utility mess falls
squarely on the Utility Companies located in California. PG&E
and Edison, in the south, conspired to rob the people of California
the opportunity to deregulate utilities in the state in the early
90's.

Imagine tens of thousands of Californians trying to change
providers while doing the right thing for their families,
cities and their planet and becoming living examples of that
change, and willing to pay up to 20% more for even a mix of
renewable energy.

Over 200 suppliers came into the state. Millions were given to the
utilities for their loss of customers and to off-set any of their
cost in regard to the deregulation plan. In PG&E case, at least...
They used the money to start a new company called Pacific Energy
while putting their old company, Pacific Gas and Electric into
receivership. Screwing many of their own employees and many older
retired widow type and senior investors who depended on these
once high-valued stock for their monthly incomes. Their execs took
bonuses and retirements, with big fat rate payer and tax payer funded
accounts and bailed with their ill-gotten gains and golden chutes to
the beaches of the world. This was 2001 in California...Sound similar
to what's happening today?

When, after much success, the 200 Spartens, mostly renewable energy
companies, came to the utilities for new customer records, usages and
such, these request were largely ignored or delayed in such a fashion
has to tie the hands of the 200, until the utility arrows rained down
upon them, killing them all, to the last one. In that day, we fought
in the shade.

All that was needed was a few well-delivered brown outs in downtown LA
during a summer heatwave until the inhabitants felt like jumping out of
the sealed widows.

Gov Grey facing a cleverly timed attack caved into the utilities, dozens
of additional gas fired turbines were agreed to by the state, rates,
artificially raised during this period, for effect, were put into long-term
power contracts, (anyone ever hear of Enron?) and basically Gov. Grey
Davis gave the state and our first born to the pirates. And the state
went into another 20 years of renewable energy dark ages. All this thanks
to those warm and fussy, grade-school, donating, childrens schools small
solar cells and other crap pushed by their clever ad buys. The same
kids THEY robbed just a couple of years before. Another 20 years of no
competition.

These are the same pirates involved in assisting with the utility mandated
solar and wind, conservation state of California rebate programs of today.
Thier workers man the school rooms, of the state, and meeting rooms and
community centers and board rooms. They are your friends, your relatives
and your neighbors.

Conditions in the marketplace will continue until someone, and maybe someone
just will, this time, but don't hold your breath. Someone must drive a large
renewable energy and emission stake through the heart of these companies
so they can return to the place they came from...their days here are numbered
let us pray._Green Earl

Statement of Lisa P. Jackson
Administrator, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
Hearing on American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009
Committee on Energy and Commerce
U.S. House of Representatives

Contacts: Betsaida Alcantara, 202-564-1692 / 4355/ alcantara.betsaida@epa.gov
Brendan Gilfillan, 202-564-2081 / 4355 / gilfillan.brendan@epa.gov

(Washington, D.C. â€" April 22, 2009) Chairman Waxman, Chairman-Emeritus Dingell, Ranking Minority Member Barton, and members of the Committee, thank you for inviting me to testify about the draft American Clean Energy and Security Act. Let me begin by commending this Committee for embarking on the serious, difficult, and essential work of crafting comprehensive, detailed energy legislation and moving it through an open, careful process in which representatives hold hearings, make amendments, and cast votes. EPA is grateful for your work.

When President Obama was inaugurated ninety-two days ago, the United States found itself in the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. So the President worked with Congress to craft the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which he signed into law sixty-four days ago. That law is now creating good jobs for Americans. Thanks to the Act, EPA is putting Americans to work overhauling clean-water systems, restoring and redeveloping polluted properties, installing clean-air equipment on diesel engines, and cleaning up leaking underground fuel tanks.

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act also injected an essential shot of adrenaline into the American clean energy sector. Economic recovery would not have been possible without that immediate relief. But President Obama has leveled with the American people: Lasting economic recovery will come only when the federal government looks beyond the quick fix and invests in building the advanced energy industries that will help restore America ’s economic health over the long term.

So President Obama has called on Congress to pass forward-looking energy legislation.

That legislation should create, here in America , millions of the clean-energy jobs that cannot be shipped overseas. It should catapult American innovators past the foreign competitors who, due to aggressive investments by their governments, now enjoy a head start in the advanced energy technologies that represent the new Internet revolution, the new biotech wave. It should reduce our dependence on oil and strengthen America ’s energy security. And it should start, in a real and tangible way, to tackle greenhouse-gas pollution, which threatens to leave to our children and grandchildren a diminished, less prosperous, less secure world.

Twenty-two days ago, Chairmen Waxman and Markey released draft legislation that strives to accomplish those goals.

The American Clean Energy and Security Act would introduce a clean energy requirement for American electric utilities and new energy efficiency programs for American buildings. Those initiatives aim to create good American jobs that cannot be shipped overseas.

The legislation would launch programs to promote electric vehicles and deploy technologies for capturing, pipelining, and geologically storing carbon dioxide produced at coal-fueled power plants. Those incentives aim to help American companies make up for lost time in the advanced energy industries that will be to the 2010s what Internet software was to the 1990s.

The legislation would institute new low-carbon requirements for vehicles and fuels, and programs to help reduce vehicle-miles traveled with increased transportation options and help for communities that want to plan for sustainable growth. Those proposals aim to reduce America ’s dependence on oil and cut back on the hundreds of billions of dollars that Americans send overseas every year.

And the legislation would put in place a declining cap on greenhouse-gas pollution. That market-based system aims to protect our children and grandchildren from severe environmental and economic harm, and great threats to national-security while further invigorating advanced, American energy industries.

The American Clean Energy and Security Act draws on the thoughtful legislation that Chairman-Emeritus Dingell and Congressman Boucher drafted last October and is a serious effort at constructing comprehensive energy and climate legislation. We look forward to working with Congress as this bill moves forward to ensure that it meets the President’s objectives in the areas of an efficient and comprehensive approach that creates jobs, leverages our tremendous capacity for innovation, reduces our dependence on oil, and prevents the worst consequences of climate change.

I would like to note that the Waxman-Markey discussion draft tracks many of the recommendations put forward by the U.S. Climate Action Partnership, a coalition that includes American manufacturers such as Alcoa, John Deere, Caterpillar, Dow, Ford, General Motors, and General Electric. Those employers of American workers recognize, as they declare at the outset of their Blueprint for Legislative Action, that:

“The United States faces an urgent need to transform our nation’s economy,
make the country more energy secure, and take meaningful action to slow,
stop, and reverse [greenhouse-gas] emissions to address climate change.

I believe that the leadership of this Committee is stepping up to provide the kind of “new vision and policy direction that those companies talk about.

Now, the “no, we can’t crowd will spin out doomsday scenarios about runaway costs. But EPA’s available economic modeling indicates that the investment Americans would make to implement the cap-and-trade program of the American Clean Energy and Security Act would be modest compared to the benefits that science and plain common sense tell us a comprehensive energy and climate policy will deliver.

I ask the members of this Committee to recall the Acid Rain Trading Program, drafted by this Committee and signed by a Republican President in 1990. Beltway corporate lobbyists insisted that the law would cause “death for businesses across the country. But as the members of this Committee who worked hard on that legislation know well, it ended up delivering annual health and welfare benefits estimated to be over 120 billion dollars at an annual cost of only 3 billion dollars. Our economy grew by 64 percent even as the program cut acid rain pollution by more than 50 percent. And past auto-emissions standards sparked key technological innovations that made cars more appealing to consumers here and abroad.

Achieving energy independence and reducing carbon emissions are not easy challenges. But this Committee has dealt with difficult challenges before. When Chairman Dingell and Chairman Waxman joined together with other Members of the Committee to pass the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments, they were reported out of this Committee by a 42-to-1 vote. That bill dealt with controversial issues â€" not just acid rain, but also smog, hazardous air pollutants, and the threat to the ozone layer. But you found consensus, and your legislation has ended up cutting pollution at a fraction of the cost that was predicted at the time.

There may be more than one dissenting vote this time, but that does not mean that the Committee’s history cannot be repeated this year. We want to work with you in finding consensus in the coming weeks, so that we can reduce our dependence on oil, create millions of new jobs in innovative energy technologies, and significantly reduce greenhouse-gas emissions.

Thank you. I look forward to the answering the members’ questions.

New York Times Article Calls Solar Power Rebate Program a 'VICTIM' of It's own Success...HOG WASH

By Green Earl

The link above should take you to the story written by Jan Ellen Spiegel
for The New York Times.

It tells the sad story, again, as it's been repeated now for the entire
thirty years I've been in the renewable energy business, It tells the
sad tale, of a solar utility rebate program that has been so successful,
that the utility fund, that ran it, ran the program right out of money and
out of business.

This crap has been going on for years. As long as we let utility companies
collect rebated funds from their rate payers and expect them to do the right
thing by the conservation and solar, wind programs they are mandated to
finance. Just who do we think is going to come out on the loosing end of
this deal, The Wolf (Big Utilities) or the Baby Chicks (Solar Companies)???

Please someone help me get the word to the administration...who ever designed
this recipe for failure of the renewable industry, "needed a check up, from
the neck up," to quote Zig Ziggler

Something must be done and soon, to see that these utility companies not only
do not collect the funds, at least directly, but do not budget the solar rebates
for the industry or control the growth, Or like the past 3 decades...there
will be many more "Victims" And for God Sakes Don't Let their paid help guide
and Manage the rebate programs so important to the new growth of the industry.

BigIdeasforObama] Ausra's New Thermal Solar Electric Power Plant In Production in California

Monday, April 20, 2009 11:06 PM

"Big Ideas for Obama"

http://www.ausra.com/pdfs/KimberlinaOverview-101108.pdf

Ausra is showing us the way forward with their new Kimberlina power Thermal Solar electric power plant in California . This will use the power from the sun to generate electricity into the future, just using mirrors, lenses, pipes, steam, turbines, generators and some control systems. No expensive solar PV panels with a limited lifespan and their unresolved recycling (or “pollution”) issues, no wind turbine blades to hoist, just simple production of steam using the concentrated power of the sun.

It doesn’t take much imagination to see this technology as a major part of America ’s way forward to produce 100% renewable electricity indefinitely. Not good news for coal companies, but great news for the planet. Using just 10% of the Federal Land area in Nevada , albeit spread out across the South West, such an area of Thermal Solar power plants would produce ALL America ’s current day electricity needs. Yes ALL, that’s 100%. That’s correct. No need for ANY nuclear, no need for ANY coal, no need for ANY oil or even any hydroelectric power. We could even open up our beautiful West Coast rivers to the Pacific Salmon once again and see their populations run the river’s length as they used to long ago. This Thermal Solar technology is available today and is 100% clean. We don’t need “technologies of the future” which may not even yet exist to solve our energy and greenhouse gas problems of today. We have the solution right here and right now, it’s called Thermal Solar power and it’s ready to be replicated 100, 100 times or 10,000 times to power the whole world.

90% of the world’s population lives within 2,700 km of desert regions, and these regions could produce all their power needs cleanly like this too, using Thermal Solar Power, delivering it to those populations with less than 10% losses over that distance, all using simple nuts-and-blots Thermal Solar power technology, understandable to most people who can service a bicycle or a refrigerator. Think about it: no need for coal-fired power plants in China , no coal-fired power plants in India , in Australia , and so on. Do you hear a theme? Wonder why you’ve never heard about this technology much? You got it. There’s too much money for the COAL industry to lose if this technology was rolled out in America . It could be rolled out to power 100% of America within 5-10 years max. USA Greenhouse emissions would down 60-70% in 10 years, not in 50 years. Never thought you’d hear this was possible? It’s the same for most people. Again we wonder why C O A L L O B B Y spells N O to a clean technology like Thermal Solar Power which will put them out of business.

Please promote this Thermal Solar technology to the Obama Administration, to your Representatives, Senators, your friends, family and all your media outlets. We cannot wait for yet another “high-technology” solution requiring exotic materials, potential pollution problems from production, with huge potential profits for the few when we have Thermal Solar technology available today to power us all. This technology has been around since 1917. Isn’t it time you had your energy produced 100% renewably by Thermal Solar power today, and not have to wait another 10 or 20 years for highly exotic patented technologies to grace you with their presence? Let them come along in their own time. We all need CleanTech 100% Renewable Electricity Technology today to power all our homes and save our planet. Thermal Solar power gives you every bit of that.

All we have to do is install it in America .

OBAMA BLAMED FOR SOLAR PV MANUFACTURERS LAYOFFS

Open Letter To The Following Solar PV Panel Manufactures Sent by email to Solar Feeds, Click on Title Above for link to article on job cuts....AND OTHERS

The question is asked in another article...'WHEN WILL OBAMA STEP UP FOR SOLAR'

My question is...When will these jerks do it???

Sun Edison, Isn't that one owned by a utility company?
Sun Tech
Day 4 Energy, Cute
GT Solar
Encore,
Advanced Energy
GE and
BP

Great, I see I have one very good and important friend. Regarding the article on Solar Layoffs...

These guys deserve to go out of business. They suck, bad.

The only California companies having any success on the retail front, are the couple or three that have devised their own financing programs (**** leases) I call them. But, hey, at least they move product for the manufacture, Solar one, right?

Still...do any of these retail operations give a good GD about the customer, really care? How can you tell? Instead of blowing and going PV, are they talking and offering conservation measures first? a Cohesive Energy Audit? Hell no...

They are blowing and going...

Too damned greedy to do that. How about domestic
hot water? Three times the energy for the same collector area.

Instead they are slamming in residential PV solar systems, oversized say 6 kw where only 3.5-4 are really needed. They are taking these 20 year leases for themselves and their investors..perverting the rebate and energy credits intended for the customer. At least they found a few, and keeping the rebates and credits for themselves. Nothing but a bunch of greedy little, inexperienced kids. One has to wonder what the market price of those systems will be twenty years for now. The buy
out prices to the customers.

The result..a interbred industry and a preverted one, at best.

So instead of putting their money in experienced, in trained industry professionals, hell bent on providing a real cohesive service to the customer, they choose instead, highly educated boys, to do a man's job. Give me, give me....give me..take take take, mentality and they get what they fricken deserve.

****!

But that model, I'm thinking won't work as well when it
is used, say in commerical, MDU, multi-dwelling units, where they (I could and most of my old competitors could) really start moving the volumes of product that needs to be moved if any of these loser manufacturers would step up to the plate and take responsibility for the movement of their own product and the protection of their own
people and territories, they all want to play but they don't want to pay...even to prime the solar sales pumps. Again...too little...too late.

See ya solar manufacturers, wouldn't want to be ya.

Green Earl

Side Note: Between say 1980 and 1985 200,000 to maybe 300,000 solar domestic solar hot water heaters were manufactured, marketed, sold and installed and 4 or 5 sunbelt states. Imagine...these systems ran $3,900. what if one of YOU got real and moved 80,000 units, like ServaMatic, in the 80's. (but at you $39,000 price instead of their $3,900.) Figure it out..your the pros right? By the way, a fifty gallon drum painted black would do as good as a two panel Servamatic at $5,500-$6,500 does over night on a roof. Still you have to give credit where credit is due..they where not laying off anyone.

These marketers where some of the best the world has ever seen. Some of these spoiled, overpaid, if they clear $2K a month, kids need to go back and review, how and where these numbers where generated.

By the way, Solar City did not pioneer the solar lease. I was writing solar (10 year) leases in the Antelope Valley of LA county in 1984.

The Top 5 Solar Power Site Assessment Factors To Consider Before You Install Solar DHW or Solar PV On Your Home Or Business

For Questions, Sizing and Online Pricing, Click on title or here:

To determine if you have a good location to install solar panels to generate clean power you need to conduct a site assessment. Answering the following key questions will help you identify if you have an adequate project site to install a solar electric system:

1. Will the location provide a clear solar window from 9am-3pm without being shaded at critical times?

2. First, do you have access to install the solar panels south? if not, can you install the solar panels west facing?

3. Would you like to mount the solar panels on your roof or is there a location on the ground that is better suited? ever consider pole mounted solutions? What would work best for your location?

4. Is there an area with air flow and indirect sun to mount the grid tie inverter?

5. Where is the main electrical service panel? how about the meter? is there is sub panel? How many feet from the solar array location to the electrical service panel?

I hope this quick summary of what's required in a solar site assessment will help you figure out if the location your considering to install solar panels is optimized to provide you the maximum return on investment.
