To:Green Earl:

The September oil import numbers have been released and the news is not good. According to the Energy Information Administration of the U.S. Department of Energy, we imported 357 million barrels of oil in September at a cost of $25 billion. We imported 63 percent of the oil we used in September which is up three percentage points from August.

Energy efficiency is one solution to reducing our foreign oil dependency. October is Energy Awareness Month and I want to hear what you're doing to be more energy efficient. We just launched a new tool on the Pickens Plan website where we can all share ideas for being more energy efficient - click here to to share your story.

If you're on Twitter, you can also share your story with me there @pickensplan or on Facebook at

One thing I'm doing to be more aware of my own energy usage is to drive a car that runs on natural gas. Click here to check out a photo of me leaving the office in my Honda Civic GX - it's a nice ride!

Also, click here to view the latest BooneCam in which I talk about how I learned to be more aware of my own energy usage at a young age.

While we need to keep pursuing legislation to reduce our dependence on foreign oil, being more energy efficient is something we all can start doing right now.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei Rumored Dead

According to numerous rumors, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei reportedly died on October 14, 2009, of natural causes. The formal announcement is expected by some to be made tomorrow morning, October 15, 2009.[1] Three years ago there were similar rumors which turned out to be false. He is currently 70 years old.

According to some Iran analysts, Khamenei has maneuvered to position his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, as his successor. Khamenei has increasingly been described as the "Ali of our times" in the official media - a reference to Ali, the Shia imam who passed on the position to his son Hassan.[2]

The power of the Supreme Leader

The Supreme Leader is Iran's most powerful figure and its spiritual leader. According to the Islamic Republic's constitution, the president is Iran's second highest official after the Supreme Leader.[3] Khamenei was chosen to be Supreme Leader by an assembly of senior clerics (the Assembly of Experts).[4]

The Supreme Leader has the final word in all political and religious matters.[5] He is the figurehead of the conservative establishment in Iran. The Supreme Leader's authority includes the right to name the heads of the elite Republican Guards, the judiciary and state television. He has indirect power to vet parliamentary candidates.[6] He can confirm or dismiss a sitting president. He maintains strict control over Iran's media and regularly censors or shuts down independent newspapers and international websites.[7] He further appoints key posts in the intelligence services and the armed forces, including the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps

The 15 Hottest Hubs for Cleantech Jobs and What They Pay: Report

800px-Flat_Holm_PV_solar_array_near_FarmhouseGreen jobs have become a sort of mantra of late among the political left, with supporters looking to clean-energy sectors to produce companies hungry for new hires and help ease the pain of the economic downturn. Today research firm Clean Edge, known among other things for its annual Clean Energy Trends reports, weighed into the discussion with the release of its first report on employment titled “Clean-Tech Jobs Trends 2009.”

While some of the findings shouldn’t astonish — solar, smart grid and biofuels are three of the fastest expanding cleantech sectors — others like the 15 hottest U.S. metropolitan areas for clean-energy jobs and a listing of median salaries for a range of cleantech work provide interesting insight.

Given Clean Edge’s consistent bullishness on cleantech, it’s no surprise that the report is broadly optimistic about the sector’s capacity to create jobs in coming years. According to the authors, the current economic crisis could accelerate the transition to a clean-energy economy and major global trends — increasing action on carbon emissions reduction, lessening dependence on volatile fossil fuel prices and supplies, growing government leadership on clean energy — point to “huge potential growth” in cleantech employment. The number of jobs created could be in the “millions” in a wide range of cleantech sectors, but the report does not forecast more specific growth numbers or give a timescale for when those “millions” of jobs might be created. (The Clean Edge report does cite a recent Pew Charitable Trusts report that found cleantech jobs grew 9.1 percent from 1998 to 2007, compared with 3.7 percent growth for all U.S. jobs.)

The top five sectors for U.S. cleantech job activity — based on a combination of job placements, postings, and public and private investments — are solar; biofuels and biomaterials; conservation and efficiency; smart grid; and wind power, according to Clean Edge. But the report lists other key sectors, grouped under four categories, in which cleantech jobs are now emerging (see the chart below, courtesy Clean Edge).
top CT sectors image

Clean Edge worked with PayScale, a publisher of work-compensation data, to conduct a survey to determine median salary and wage compensation for a range of cleantech jobs. See the report (available for free as a PDF download), for a more comprehensive overview, but a sampling of salaries include: energy auditor for green buildings ($48,500 median pay); mechanical engineer for electric vehicles ($63,600); and solar energy systems designer ($42,600). Interestingly, the highest median salary listed was for project developers of renewable energy ($106,000) and the lowest was for insulation workers ($36,100).

Where are all these jobs being created? Clean Edge evaluated current and historical job postings, early stage and public market investment activity, cleantech job presence, and clean-energy patent activity to come up with the top 15 U.S. metropolitan areas for cleantech jobs (see list below). But the report notes that “the cleantech revolution is a highly dispersed phenomenon” and that no single place or region will control any one cleantech sector. Some “centers of expertise” not a part of the top 15 include Toledo, Ohio, for solar PV manufacturing and St. Louis, Mo., for green building design services.
tops metro areas

The report’s authors see five major trends reshaping the cleantech jobs landscape. Those trends include energy efficiency (some related jobs: green building, architect and insulation installer); an aging work force, especially at electric utilities, with rising retirement rates (some related jobs: wind energy technician and solar thermal generation specialist); an increasing number of cleantech educational initiatives with opportunities for students and instructors; the movement of manufacturing jobs closer to end-use markets (some related jobs: solar fabrication technician and wind turbine generator builder); and the smart grid build-out (some related jobs: advanced metering engineer and grid application systems analyst).

The end of the report lists a number of resources, such as books, news sites, conferences, career fairs, job boards, training sites and networking organizations. The accumulation of all this information into one, freely accessible document should be welcome news for any cleantech job hunter.

This is a very useful report to get an overview of where the cleantech sector is heading in the United States.

I am not surprised San Francisco is at the top of job activity. When attending green events here you can truly feel the energy of having so many passionate like minded professionals together. There also seems to be more people actually employed in the green sector versus events in other cities where people want to be employed in this emerging economy. The level of discussion at these events is also getting beyond defining and explaining sustainability amongst ourselves. It seems to be moving into the direction of actually highlighting ways to solve what could be considered the more boring “traditional” business issues. This is excellent because this means we have functional businesses actually solving environmental issues, not just aspirations to make a difference.

Quick note, the majority of my peers still in college are already looking at living in cities like San Francisco and Boston because of the density of cleantech companies there. It may be difficult for other growth oriented “new” cities like Atlanta (my hometown) to try and catch up to the momentum of these current cleantech hubs.

Colleges face need for greener classes
By Kathleen Carroll | McClatchy Newspapers
Added October 14, 2009 at 8:39 pm

HACKENSACK, N.J. — Students on college campuses are clamoring for environmentally friendly classes, all the better to prepare for an expected wave of green-collar jobs.

“Students are very interested in sustainability issues,” said Ramapo College (N.J.) President Peter Mercer. “It starts in their own lives, with recycling and their own use of resources. That, in turn, has led them to focus on sustainability in the job market.”

It’s more than solar panels and installing the latest water-filtration system. Students at all levels of higher education are combining environmental concerns with science, technology and political know-how to prepare for the changes ahead.

Anticipated new “green” jobs will range from construction and architecture to legal services and government. As the U.S. pours billions into sustainable construction – including through the fiscal stimulus package – such employment is expected to grow. One estimate, by the U.S. Conference of Mayors, projects 4.2 million green jobs nationwide by 2028, compared with750,000 today.

At Bergen Community College in Paramus, N.J., a new catalog declares “Bergen Goes Green.”

The school partnered with a local electrical workers union to create a solar-energy class to teach licensed electricians to install and service solar panels. Bergen also has introduced classes in energy-efficient home construction and sustainable interior design, said Walter Hecht, the school’s dean of continuing education.

A new four-week class aimed at real estate agents and home inspectors covers the state’s environmental rules, including lectures on underground storage tanks, radon testing and off-gassing from those sought-after granite countertops. The college will soon offer test-prep classes for contractors who want to be certified in environmentally sensitive “LEED” building practices.

Interest is high, Hecht said.

“The federal government has put an emphasis on it for stimulus dollars, and people want to be on that cutting edge,” he said. “The technology is changing so quickly, and it’s hard for people to keep up on their own. These are new skills that they need. Their customers are asking for this.”

The New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark recently created a “green careers” database and job search for its career services department. Students can click through all 100-plus college majors to search what green careers they lead to, as well as search listings of current jobs.

“Our students are interested in green everything,” said Gregory Mass, executive director for career development services at NJIT. “The students who come here are very career-minded, and this really has become a way of life and a value that they hold very much that carries forward into their life’s work.”

Student Lori-Ann Sciachitano, 28, is finishing up a degree in science, technology and society at NJIT in Newark. She said her classmates are going green, with an eye on the job market.

“Green technology is the future of technology,” she said. “If we’re not taught the most leading technologies, we’re not going to be able to compete with students who are.”

Students engaged in postgraduate study also are combining hard science with the social sciences in new “sustainability” degree programs. Sustainability science studies the interaction of humans and their environment in the hopes of influencing business practices and public policy.

The goal: graduates who can link human practices with their ecological effects and handle new business and government demands for sustainable practices. Such practices provide goods and services without degrading natural resources, such as by using efficient new technologies, non-polluting manufacturing processes or easily replaced materials.

Ramapo, in Mahwah, N.J., is about to open a new sustainability education center on campus, and is awaiting approval for a new master’s degree in sustainability studies. Kean University in Union recently introduced a new bachelor’s degree in sustainability. And at Montclair State University in Little Falls, officials are developing new undergraduate and graduate programs in sustainability science.

Doctoral candidates there recently began a new Ph.D.program in environmental management.

“We humans are interested in maintaining our way and quality of life – but how do we balance our ecology and economy?” said Michael Weinstein, director of the Institute for Sustainability Studies at Montclair State University in Little Falls.

“The big issue for this century is reconciling human use of natural resources with the ability of the natural ecosystem to provide those resources.”

Lois Kazakoff: A look at the Bay Area jobs future

In the second of The Chronicle's symposia on the effect of joblessness on the Bay Area, panelists cautioned us that all is not doom and gloom but that the state and the region's employers need to invest more in retraining.

The Bay Area has weathered serious, economy shifting, downturns before -- the decline of the defense industry in the 1980s and the dot-com bust in the '90s -- and rebounded. "The amazing thing about California is how resilient it is," said Clair Brown, a UC Berkeley economist in focuses on technology in her research. Yet large employers worry that as Baby Boomers retire, there will not be the young folks with the skills to take over. Brown says that is because large firms quit offering training and retraining. "Companies have created this crisis themselves."

Future jobs will arise in technology, health care, biotechnology, life sciences and the hospitality industries, as well to a lesser degree in the much-vaunted "green" sector. But not immediately.

Todd Miller, a self-described serial entrepreneur, reminds that job seekers can't rely on traditional sources for employment and that "entrepreneurialism" has to be an aspect of the economic recovery. That is, if you can't find a job, you will have to create a job for yourself -- something relatively easy when a laptop computer and a cell phone form a virtual office.
A few highlights of the symposium:

-- While big employers bemoan the abysmal math and work skills of potential employees here, the two areas in the country with the highest skill level are: No. 1 San Jose and, No. 2 San Francisco, according to UC Berkeley economist Enrico Moretti.

-- Future jobs will require training and retraining of workers just as state budget cuts are undermining capacity at community colleges, state universities and the University of California to train workers. "State government is affecting employment in a very bad way," said John Grubb of the Bay Area Council.

-- Local employers predict a "silver tsunami," with hundreds of Baby Boomers retiring, opening up jobs for younger workers.

-- There are high-level jobs and low-level jobs, but there are no jobs in the middle -- especially middle-class, mid-skill level jobs that lead to career jobs. "The goal is to bring back well-paid blue-collar jobs," said Dorothy Chen, director of the Workforce Investment Board in Alameda County.

The next and final symposium will be held Oct. 28. It will focus on what we need to do as a community to get to these jobs of the future.

We are 48th in K-12 education. We will need to keep importing brains from India, China, Russia, ect..... to keep innovation alive. Our so called "future" latino population is not on path to fill the jobs necessary in either maintaining a super state, nor advancing it in the areas of technology innovation. The future majority simply isn't graduating enough people in the area of science and there is no evidence to suggest this will change any time soon. Such a shame.

The problem is not illegal immigrants or strict environmental regulations, but the way in which our political system is structured, using ballot measures that overburden the state budget. It is time for the legislators to do their jobs, and that goes for the governor too.

I don't know about the part regarding the rebound after the "dot-com bust in the '90s", since it appears to have been fueled by a debt-laden housing bubble.

At least the dot-com madness involved fools and their own money. This latest one had people taking out teaser-rate loans on wildly overpriced assets.

Which one sounds more dangerous and likely to have lasting spillover? Which one involves direct government bailouts of the worst banks and other offenders? Asking these questions answers them.

awarshirt: you have no idea what you're talking about. It's all the banks fault? Wrong. Blame starts with politicians. Plenty of bank CEOs LOST their jobs. Whoever got TARP money is PAYING IT BACK, WITH INTEREST! "They raise interest rates"?? Who is "they"? And interest rates have come DOWN, not gone up! Don't post until you do some homework.

Dear Earl Allen,

Tonight's deadline is just a few hours away, but I have amazing news to share right now: we blew past our original goal of 1,000 new donors.

That means it's time to double down. We're setting a new goal of 2,000 new donors by midnight tonight, and only you can make it happen.

Can you make a matching donation of $25 before the midnight deadline and double your impact?

Powerful special interests are escalating their opposition to clean energy, and we can't let them get the upper hand.

The way we'll stop them -- the only way -- is with a vigorous grassroots movement that reaches communities throughout this country. Our opponents aren't going to back down, so we've got to fight for every inch of ground.

A previous donor has pledged to match your first contribution if you act before midnight tonight. Make a $25 donation now to double your impact and strengthen our movement to Repower America:

We are facing the biggest challenge of a generation. You can make sure we're ready.

Please make a matched donation before tonight's deadline.

You not only never need to purchase polluting, expensive alternative fuels, or spend a fortune on new batteries down the road because our vehicles carry their 'gas station' on the hood and rear solar panelled tops. We need less batteries mainly because our FMVSS (SAFETY) approved vehicles are lightweight. When you drive less, you actually can sell power at electric vehicle charging stations and at your home with a bi-directional charging connection.
